I wanted to pay tribute to the nearby Brickfield Park, and how it was a main source of fresh air and socially distant meetups for many locals during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Brickfield is so called because clay was once harvested there to make the famous Dolphin’s Barn yellow bricks, and the Children’s Hospital is also nearby, so the Wizard of Oz theme seemed appropriate. Mostly I just wanted to capture the sense of optimism as the restrictions are lifted, and how it feels to be able to link arms with your loved ones again.
Originally from Wexford, I graduated from NCAD in 2006 and am now based in Dublin 12, working full-time from home as an illustrator. People, characters and pop culture are my favourite subject matter and my body of work spans a variety of media, including children’s books, advertising, packaging, animation and more.
