This was the first stamp issued by the Irish Free state after the war of Independence in 1922. Previously, our stamps were British as we were a part of the United kingdom. Briefly in the interm we used British stamps of King George overprinted with Irish text. As indicated on the sides of this box there are still some post boxes in use from before independence which were just painted over with the new Irish green.
